![]() ![]() Įven though healthcare professionals today are better at recognising sarcopenia, many research findings have not yet been translated into clinical practice. ![]() Sarcopenia is now formally recognised as a muscle disease with an ICD-10-MC Diagnosis Code that can be used to bill for care in some countries. Expert groups worldwide have published complementary definitions of sarcopenia, and researchers have made remarkable strides in understanding muscle and its roles in health and in disease. In the decade since EWGSOP’s initial work, researchers and clinicians have explored many aspects of sarcopenia. This meeting took place 10 years after the gathering of the original EWGSOP, and an update was deemed necessary to reflect scientific evidence that has accumulated since then. In early 2018, the Working Group met again (EWGSOP2) to determine whether an update to the definition of sarcopenia was justified. In 2010, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) published a sarcopenia definition that was widely used worldwide this definition fostered advances in identifying and caring for people at risk for or with sarcopenia.
